Andrew

by teresa
Since I have the Williams/Wallace family tuning in to my blog, I thought I would post this picture of Andrew and Chris. It was taken over the summer at a party we hosted. I think Andrew has you all fooled. I bet you think he is shy and boring.....but you are WRONG! He is hilarious! Silly, fun, keeps you laughing. Not in a disrespectful way either! He's just a neat kid! At this party...he said,"do you dare me to lay my head in your husbad's lap?" At another party we had (Lauren's 16th) he said,"do you dare my to go upstairs and lay in the bed with Chris?" He did it too. Chris was upstairs watching a game on tv and he climbed right beside him. I wish I would have got a picture of that!

things in my pocket......

by teresa
Sorry....I wore sweats today. No pockets!

A moments peace

by teresa
Chris took Ben over to nanny Jackie's after we ate dinner. Nick got into a movie (the fantastic four), so I walked next door to mom and dads. Dad was in the den laying on the couch(heating pad on his side....he used the industrial floor buffer at church yesterday for almost four hours) and mom was in there on the computer (reading my blog :) So, I hung out and chatted for awhile. That was nice. Before I left, Katy and the kids came by. Kai was bummed that Ben wasn't home. Kaden was being very smiley. Kristian was watching tv and on the computer.

NTO

by teresa
Nick had a great day at school. He said he looked the best in his tie because nobody else matched. I think the was the pint....to look silly and random. But Nick....being so....well...."like Nick"....would never mix match his clothes. He informed us that he and the other boys formed a club now. The NTO.....National Tie Organization. Their motto is...wear a tie till you die. They also have change the day of the week from Friday....to Tieday. Geeks...I mean....how cute!

Where Are My Keys??

By Chris

Feeling really stupid! Around 11:30 everyday I start really Jones-ing for a Diet Coke . . . which I typically solve by riding down to 7-11 for a Super Big Gulp. So, I got my cell phone ready and even offered to pick one up for a colleague too. Then I look on my desk for my keys . . . not in their normal spot. This has happened before. Kitchen room? Nope. Check the bathroom. Not there either. By the fax machine, I was there? Nope. I must have left them in the car. Out to the parking lot, then. Hey, where's my car? Oh, yeah. I didn't drive. duh! Tracy in the office is off to get my diet coke for me though!

So, clearly, this means . . . . I should buy a new car. Right?

breakfast date

by teresa
This morning we let Lauren have take the honda to school. She has a very busy day....school, meeting, go to work and pick up paycheck, dinner with friends and then cheer for the basketball game tonight. Since I didn't want to play chaufer, we let her have the car for the day. So, that meant I had to take Chris to work....and then I'll pick him up this evening around 8:00pm.....just kidding Chris :) So on the way to work, Chris took me on a breakfast date. We had eggs, ham and bacon. We even got to chat (that rarely happens at home without endless interuptions) over coffee. Guess where we went.

national tie day????

by teresa
Nick came home yesterday and informed us that he wanted to wear a tie to school on Friday. He said his friend Jonah told him it was national tie day (of course Jonah made it up). So he and his friends are all supposed to wear a tie to school today. Not with dress clothes mind you....with their regular school clothes. He was upstairs coordinating his outfits with Chris' tie selections for a couple of hours last night. Jonah kept calling....making sure Nick was straight about today. Jonah is real cool. Messy hair, swept across his face(mom owns her own hair studio...so it always looks just neat).....cool thrown together looking outfits. You know...slip on checkerboard vans....black dickie pants (sometimes shorts...even in the winter).... concert tee (kiss, ac/dc,etc.). The complete OPPOSITE of my Nicky. But you know what? They are really good friends. I think that's neat! Especially since Nick doesn't have many friends under 40. Nick thinks he is the coolest kid that walks the planet. He is the sooo sweet, mild mannered, respectful, and completely adorable! Total cutie patootie! And his family is just as great. Mom and dad are completely involved in their kids lives(he has an older brother). Nick is blessed to have Jonah at school to loosen him up a bit. Now Nick is cool by association. Hee Hee :)

He looks so cute!

collage

by teresa

Here is the collage Ben and Chris made. Remember...they had to find and athlete, temperature, cartoon, and the time for a movie in the newspaper. Then cut it out and glue in on paper.

reading month

by teresa
Tonights activity is: Play a board game or some type of game that involves reading. I wonder if the Goblet of Fire playstation2 game counts? Probably not.

diet update

by teresa
Down FOUR pounds now. I was very good yesterday. A few cheese sticks, couple pieces of turkey, chicken breast, and then for dinner we had tuna steaks (with peanut sauce) and green beans. Yummy! Then around 9:00pm we had our no carb JELLO. It's actually good.

things in my pocket......

by teresa
We'll....I just changed into my jammies. Here's what was in my pockets. An empty box of nerds candy(it was beside the couch and wet...I think Shorty ate them), a name tag (on our bedroom floor....must have fallen out of Chris' bible when he was reading today), a lincoln log(my uncle Jim gave a set to Nick many years back. I think there were a thousand or so in the set. THANKS JIMMY! I find them EVERYWHERE), safety pin and dry cleaner tag (on our dresser...Chris?), a broken mechanical pencil(under Nick's dresser....he has a thing for mechanical pencils. He got like 30 in his stocking), and a giant paper clip(under the boys desk....Ben said it was on the milk duds nanny sent home a few days ago).

Nick's glasses

by teresa
Doesn't Nick look good in his new glasses? He ws very excited to get them. He's been wanting some for years. He even faked near blindness a couple of years ago to get to go to the eye doctor. Only to be disappointed that his eyes were fine. But much to his delight, he failed the vision test at his school this year. We took him to the optometrist. and lo and behold....he actually need glasses. Now his dreams will really come true if he can get some braces too. Good grief!

reading month

by teresa
January is reading month at Ben's school (I thought every month was reading month:). They sent home an activities calendar with a different thing (involving reading or storytelling) to do with the family each night. You must initial each day...sign the bottom...and return it when the month is over. I think that if you return it completed you get a treat or something. This is tonights required activity: Have a scavenger hunt for different things such as a picture of an athlete, temperatures, favorite cartoon, the time for a movie of tv program in the newspaper or a magazine. Cut them out and make a collage on a sheet of paper.

We missed yesterdays activity. So we will have to it it tonight. Ben is insisting! The activity is: Each person tells a story at the dinner table. Decide who's story is the best.

Do these things with your family. I'll give you the new activities each day.

lauren...duh....

by teresa
Just remembered a funny thing that happened over the holidays. Lauren used the honda just about everyday when school was out. Work, shopping, parties, lots of activities. Well, one day the car was in need of gas. She usually uses it up and leaves it for us. this time she needed to go somewhere before we did. Hey guys....the car is out of gas....lauren says. Well Lauren, I guess that's your problem and not ours....dad says. I don't want to spend my money on it....lauren says. I'm Christmas shopping for Nick, Ben, you guys, and all my friends today. do you have any cash....she asks. NO!...dad says. Well, right before she left I snuck her my Visa checkcard. I told her to go get gas and bring me back my card and the reciept. I hurried her off before Chris caught on to us. I figured he wouldn't want her using it.....but I got swayed by the fact that she was getting us all gifts with her first paycheck. Anyhow.....a few minutes later the phone rings. It's Lauren. I answer. Mom...she says. I am at the gas station and I put your card in the machine....and it won't come out. It just keeps asking for the card again. GREAT!! What have you done Lauren...I ask. Well....I think I put the card in the slot where the reciept comes out. WHAT???? I put it in and it wouldn't take it. So i shoved it in thinking that's what I needed to do. NOOOOOOO! What should I do mom? Now all this time i am in the kitchen trying to whisper my frustration to her. DON'T LEAVE, I said. Get someone to get my card out now!!!!!
she sounded terrified. If you know Lauren , then you know she hates to ask strangers anything. I hung up and tried to go about my business. About ten minutes later Lauren returned with a full tank and my card. She told me....the gas station attendant had to come unlock the machine for her and pull the card out from the inside. Her told her that has actually happened to other before. Duh!!!!!

After all that sneaking and frustration......I found out later that Chris had snuck his card to her when she went out with her friends to tropical smoothie cafe.

Are we good parents are what? Don't answer that!

Karate Mom?

By Chris

Teresa has apparently caught the blogging bug again. But, I guess I get to chime in with her disconnected for a few hours.

I dropped by the Karate for Christ Dojo last night to catch an interesting discourse between Teresa and one of the staff members there. It seems that Teresa is getting some pressure to take up karate! And, she's thinking about it. Now, it's not the traditional stuff the boys are doing (Ben got his Little Dragons Brown belt, and is closing in on Little Dragon Black Belt very quickly). Teresa would take part in a form that is much more sedate and "beautiful." I guess there is meditation and slow, graceful forms and exercises? I think she ought to do it, and put on a demo for everyone in a few months, outfit and all. Ben and Nick would think that was soooo cool if mom was doing belt tests, forms and stuff. Do it , Do it!!!

I once was lost...but now I'm found

by teresa
Whel I was putting all the Christmas stuff back in the attic yesterday, I noticed a big brown box in there. I had no idea what it was....so I climbed in and pulled it out. Surprise! It was a present I had bought for Ben off of ebay. I got it at the beginning of Nov., hid it in the attic and forgot about it. It was a good one too. I big remote control hummer. He saw it in toysrus($99) and put it on his list. I found it new on ebay for ($20 + shipping). I was so excited, I can't believe I forgot to wrap it. Oh well....his birthday in in Feb. So I'm all set.

rose bowl

by teresa
Did anyone see the Rose Bowl last night? I watched it until 11:00pm, but I got too tired to finish. Who won? I wanted USC (hello...Matt Leinhart..sigh), and Chris wanted Texas.

things in my pocket......

by teresa
A bottle of whiteout (taken from Lauren's desk and found under Nick's bed...yikes), a matchbox car (parked under the kitchen table), a black little rubber doodad (in my car...I hope I don't need it), a marta token(in Ben's bookbag....I wonder if he was planning a quick getaway), snowman confetti and a Christmas light fuse (on the stairs....must have dropped out when taking boxes to attic), ponytail holder (in the sink....LAUREN), starburst wrapper(sigh....I love starburst), a gold rose pin (in my shoe.....BEN), some green clip thingy(in my car), and three tags off the things from the thrift store.

diet update

by teresa
It is now the beginning of day three. I started out weighing.....YEAH RIGHT! Anyway....I lost THREE pounds. Go Teresa...Go Teresa....it's your birthday!

Yesterday, Chris and I were soooooo hungry at dinner. So after karate (he met me there to watch the boys classes) we drove over to golden corral and MEATED IT UP! It was there mexican night (sigh). But I just got a big pile of all the fajita meats (beef, chicken, steak) and mixed them all together. Then made a hug pile of broccoli with the melted chees sauce on top....GOOD EATS!

off to work

by teresa
Today I am working at Ben's school. Working the desk.....protecting the hall....keeping the peace.....cutting something out (I'm pretty sure). So I guess there won't be as many blog updates from me today. Maybe Chris will chime in. Later dudes.....

where are you christmas?

by teresa
Today I took down all of our outdoor decorations. The wreaths from the windows. The little light up trees that line the walkway. Bushes, trees, fence....no more lights. I also took all the things from the living room and packed up all the christmas dishes. I took everything to the attic. Sad...frown...tear....

tagged

by teresa
I went to petsmart and got Shorty a new collar and a snazzy new tag (bling bling). It has his name and address on it. He also has his rabies tag and pet license. But I'm not putting them on there. It makes too much niose when he trots through the house (jingle jingle).

twister

by teresa
Is twister allowed in the Pentecostal Holiness Church?
And that's the pastors daughter too! Shame! :)

party?

by teresa
Every night when I put the boys to bed, I make sure the room is spotless. Every toy put in it's place! Hamper emptied! Boys tucked in! But something happens after I walk downstairs. How do I know this? Because, when I finally go up to bed a few hours later, and go in to check on the boys one last time. There is stuff everywhere! It's like they have secret parties at night, inviting all the other kids from the neighborhood once I go downstairs. I don't hear these parties....or see lights from theses parties. But they happen! The remnants are left for me to find. Last nights party mess was (now remember...it was spotless when I left it) uno cards (all over the floor and under the bed), nerf dart gun (dart stuck to picture on wall), camcorder (nick got one for christmas), empty water bottle, 2 milkduds on the desk(milkduds...where in the world did milkduds come from?), and an empty baggie (looks like it has cheezit crumbs in it), and 3 little matchbox cars (lined up by the door...so I can step on them in the dark..OUCH!). Now you tell me....doesn't that sound like that makings of a fun party?

Nick's Ladies

by teresa
Yesterday, after Nick's bus was about 30 minutes late, I called the school. Mrs. Gorman, one of the school secretaries answered. I told her it was Mrs. Green.....Oh...Hello Mrs. Green! Nick came in to the office today to show us his new glasses! He looks wonderful! They really flatter his face! He is so sweet! We love him so much! He comes in to the office and gives us a hug all the time! I am really proud of how good he is doing in school! Did you know he helps out in the special needs class and they love him too! He is so respectful...and that is very rare with kids his age! We'll...after about 2 minutes of this I finally remembered why I had called. I asked about his bus and she said a different bus had to come pick them up and they would be home soon. It's nice to know Nick has friends. I just wish a few of them were under 40. But that's our Nick! He always gravitates toward the adults. Back at halloween, he was invited to a party by a kid from his class. We were so excited that he would have some kid interaction. We dropped him off and came back for him 2 hours later. The boys mom gushed about how wonderful Nick was, and how good of a conversationalist he was. Come to find out....he had spent the entire time in the kitchen with all the parents that stayed. Good grief!

Froggy

by teresa
Ben has a new favorite book series. It used to be any book about "Biscuit" , the dog. Now It is any book about "Froggy". His teacher reads the class froggy books (by Jonathan London) and Ben loves them. Froggy's little sister, Froggy's day with dad, Froggy learns to swim are some that I bought him for Christmas. They are perfect read aloud books. Silly phrases, great artwork....you can be very expressive with them. Go check some out and read to a kid!

phase one

by teresa
Yesterday Chris, Lauren and I went back on phase one of the southbeach diet. We all cheated big time over the holiday...so now we are going to be serious for a few weeks and then work our way to phase two again. So I'll be eating lots of boiled eggs, cheese sticks, and lunchmeat during the days. And back to nothing but MEAT and some veggies for dinners. Bye bye carbs! I'll miss you old friend!

things in my pocket.....

by teresa
I don't know if it is just me, or if this happens to other moms too. As my day goes by, I find things lying around the house here and there. Tucked into couch cushions, under beds, on counters and under rugs. As I find them I put the in my pocket. And forget about them! Till the end of the day. I get undressed and dump my pockets on my dresser. Last night I had such and eclectic mix of treasures I thought maybe I would start sharing it with you guys each day. So here it is. The contents of my pockets from yesterday. Two balls (one looks like a rock...but it's a ball), a ponytail holder(bathroom floor), match box car(couch), bobby pin(under Ben's bed), a key (under the rug. to what...I don't know), 2 light bright pegs(in my shoe....Ben!), a dollar(dryer...it's mine now!), a guatemalan coin(couch), a dime (from under the dryer), wad of tissue(I have a cold!). ENJOY!

sleepy Ben

by teresa
For the past few mornings, after getting Ben up, dressed and groomed, he has opted to go back to sleep on the couch and let me take him to school. The bus comes at 7:00am....but if I take him we don't leave until 7:40. I get him up around 6:35am. So he has gotten almost an hour of extra sleep every morning. This has been very surprising since riding the school bus is Ben's very favorite thing to do!

Stupid Dog!

by teresa
Last night our dog Shorty escaped form the yard. I let him out in the backyard around 8:00pm, not knowing that the gate was slightly opened. After a few minutes went by I opened the door to let him back in and he was not on the porch waiting. I called....no shorty! Upon inspection I saw the gate open just a crack. Oh man....stupid dog! It was cold....wet....and dark. I wasn't going out to look for him. The boys were in bed, Lauren was cheering and Chris was at ODU. So, I stood on the front porch whistling for awhile.....with no response. So I went back to my crossword puzzle. Oh be quiet...you would have done the same thing! Stupid dog! We'll, after an hour had passed and he didn't come scratch on the door, I got up and went to the porch. Just then I saw Chris pulling into the driveway. Good! I'll tell him to go look for the dog! He opened his door and ......out jumped Shorty! What? Chris said he was driving down our street and noticed a car stopped at our corner with it's door open. He pulled up and realized the person was trying to get something into it's car. SHORTY! He opened his car door and yelled out Shorty's name.....Shorty came running and hopped into the passenger seat. Chris drove him home and he jumped out and ran into the house. then went straight to the back door as is he needed to go out again. Yeah right! I wasn't falling for that one again! We also noticed that he didn't have his collar on. The boys must have taken it off....and now I can't find it. So I will be going to petsmart today to get a new one and a tag with his name and address on it. I wonder if those people were going to try to find his home or keep him? I can't believe that dog was going to jump into a strangers car! After all I do for him! Stupid dog!

Go Away!

By Chris

Teresa sure was glad to send all of us back on our normal, productive routines this morning. I thought I would take a little time off this week too, but she wasn't too excited about that. In fact, she told me to take my basketball tickets with me for the game tonight at 7 so I wouldn't have to come home first! (With it being the first day back, the boys will be skipping this game).

is anybody out there?

by teresa
I keep on blah blah blahging along, but rarely get any comments. Is anyone even reading any of my drivel?

narnia

by teresa
Chris and I took the boys to see narnia over the Christmas break. Me and the boys were very excited to see it....Chris on the other hand just went along for the ride. He kept saying....I can't believe you are really making do this. I guess movies with talking animals are just not in his genre. (although "babe" is still one of his favorites...he uses quotes from it all the time) Anyway...the movie was wonderful. Epic fight scenes, incredible special effects and it stayed pretty dead on with the book. Chris did look over at me at one point when a beaver walked up and started talking......."you owe me big" , he said! That'll do Chris....that'll do.

attack of the clones

by teresa
Well we just finished watching attack of the clones. That was a really good movie. The special effects are so much better than the star wars of the 70's. Yoda is so cool in these new ones. The light saber fight between him and count dooku was awesome! I can't wait to see the revenge of the sith. Although I'm a little sad to know that anakin (darth vader) will be turning to the dark side in the next one.

target

by teresa
Lauren got called into work this evening. She was still in her pjs ( a real lazy day) and she got the call. She she went from bum to beauty in about 10 minutes and was out the door. Gotta make that money!

the phantom menace

by teresa
George came over today and brought the star wars movies to watch on the big screen. I made chili and nachos to snack on. We just finished the phantom menace. Now we are eating chili and then watching attack of the clones. Maybe next weekend we will get together again to finish the series off with the revenge of the sith. I LOVE STAR WARS! I know I'm a geek! Don't you love this photo of darth maul (the villian in tpm) ? Pretty!

Teen Christmas Party

by teresa
The youth group in our church had a Christmas party this weekend. The new youth pastor and his wife were also at the party. Lauren said they all had a good time. I sent the camera with her, which always yields interesting shots. whenever 2 or more teens are together somewhere.....craziness ensues! Here are some of my favorites.

I get my house back

by teresa
Tomorrow Chris goes back to work (after 2 weeks off) and the kids go back to school....... YIPPEE!!! That's all I have to say about that.

Happy New Year!

by teresa
Tonight we spent a few hours at the Mayhues new years party. Lots of good conversation, good food and football. Came home around 10:30 and hopped into our pj's. Then watched Dick Clark until midnight. He (Dick Clark) was very sad looking. Slurred speech and actually looked his age. He must have had a really bad stroke. I felt like crying. Anyway.....Lauren went to a Megan's house after work to spend the night. Megan's mother said they were going to eat hot wings and watch "the march of the penguins" on dvd. Party on! Nick fell asleep on the couch about 5 minutes after we got home.

Ben stayed up until midnight (his first time). He went outside with me and banged a pot (my mom and I always do this). Mom, dad and Geri were all outside when we went out there. We said our happy new years and stood in the street watching all the fireworks going off in the neighborhood. And I'm not talking about just sparklers (which dad had), I'm talking full blown fireworks! They are illegal in Va. But that doesn't stop the rednecks around here. It sounds like missles are going off outside my window. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

pa pa pa pa pa pa papa johns

by teresa
Tonight Nick and Chris went to the ODU game and Lauren went to a party with some kids from church. So, Ben and I ordered in. We ordered online. I have never done this before. It worked. You know....after you submit the order online....you sit there wondering if anyone is even checking the computer. Should I call? NO....that's the whole idea dummy! No hassle. Just click....and your pizza is here in thirty minutes! Ben was pleased. It even came with free chicken strips for ordering online. Cool!

Christmas morning

by teresa
We all got up early Christmas moring so the kids could open their presents before church. I liked going to church on Christmas. No classes to teach....just worshipping with your family, celebrating Jesus birth and taking communion as a family. After all....that's the reason for the season! We came home and ate all day long.

Katy and the kids, mom and dad, grandaddy dyer and george and jackie came over and ate and exchanged gifts through the day. Then mom had us all over in the evening for chilli and more gifts. We were all exhausted by the end of the day. But it was a perfect day! Happy Birthday Jesus! Here are some of the highlight pics. from the day.

Botanical gardens

by teresa
We (katy an I) took all the kids to the botanical gardens so I could take pictures that we could use for gifts for mom and Jackie. We took over a hundred shots. They turned out real good. We matched and everything! Once in the frames they were really outstanding. It was a great idea. By the way....did you know you have to pay to get into the botanical gardens? $6.00 for every person in the car! Good grief!!

Kids Christmas play

by teresa
Here are a few pictures from the play the kids were in at church. Ben was a shepherd (a rapping shepherd), and Nick was a narrator (with lots of lines). They both were outstanding!

Karate Christmas

by teresa
The boys Karate school had their annual Christmas party and we really enjoyed it. There was lots of food some cool demos and an awards ceremony. Ben was involved in one of the demos. It was 5 little dragons (Ben's karate group) performing a choreographed routine to "Proud to be an American".

It was AWESOME! Then during the awards ceremony...both boys recieved awards. Nick....the most prestigous for his age group. It was a great night.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa

by teresa
Ben's school had a breakfast with santa on a saturday morning. I volunteered to help with it, so the boys came along with me. They had a good time. When we pulled up Santa and Mrs. Claus were arriving in style.

Ben loved that!!

Then the boys ate and played while I worked. After a while Ben and I couldn't find Nick. I sent Ben off to find him.
Of course he was in the cafeteria working with the lunch lady. He was serving breakfast. He was in heaven!

It's Fixed!

by teresa
We finally got the computer fixed this week. I am so glad to be bloggin again. I never realized how much I did on the computer until it was gone. I was kinda lost. But I'm back now baby!

Christmas In Reverse

By Chris
Finally, all the Christmas practices and performances are over. Nick, Ben and Kristian all starred in the church show "Christmas in Reverse" last night to top off a busy few weeks. It was very cute. Nick was one of the narrators, and did very well articulating his parts clearly. He wore a tie and white shirt and looked pretty sharp. Kristian was an Angel and took everything very seriously. Ben was animated, cute and on point for his solo rap and other parts. Teresa got it all on video. Pictures coming soon.

Christmas Early

By Chris
We were so glad that cousin Joey got better in time for the Dyers to come down from Warrenton for Saturday and part of Sunday. They're really the only out-of-town family we have, and it's so neat to see them. I know it sounds like a cliche, but the kids grow so much in just a few months. We learned that Jamie played basketball for this first time . . . which, of course, is very exciting for me. Soon he'll be playing in a Chritian basketball organization called Upward, which I have heard great things about. We'll definitely have to make a trip up 95 to see him in action. He and brother Joey are getting really tall. The men enjoyed a few hours away to watch my ODU Monarchs drub DePaul in basketball by 44 points . . . so all is good!

Computer Problems

By Chris
Well, we're having some computer problems, so the blog is a little low on pictures until we get some things straight.

Karate Christmas

By Chris
Teresa, our staff photographer, will put up pictures soon . . . but the Karate for Christ dinner was very good. All the Greens went, along with the grandparents (minus sick Grandaddy Allen). We knew Ben would be one of five Little Dragons in a demo, and that was exciting. What we didn't know was that Nick and Ben would get awards from the Dojo, both of them for displaying the underlying Christian ethics associated with Karate For Christ. We were very proud, and got lots of pictures. Ben's demo was very cute, and he looked like a real pro. He didn't seem nervous at all doing his moves before a couple hundred people. Nick's award really touched him . . . he was beaming and anxious to get the new patches on his "uniform." We really love Karate for Christ, and learned their reach was even further than we knew . . . this ministry is touching the lives of hundreds and hundreds in Hampton Roads and across the world, we learned. If you are ever asked to support them, you ought to do it.

Who's Money?

By Chris
Well, Teresa cashed Lauren's first paycheck for her, which started an interested conversation . . . which will continue.

When Lauren discovered her check had been converted to cash (something Lauren had not figured out how to do), she was very anxious to get the money. Of course, I had different ideas . . . the kind of ideas that make teenagers think parents are, well, obstacles. First, we would take $50 off the top. Money she had spent promising to pay us when she cashed her check. She couldn't believe the little eating out here and trinkets there added up to $5o so quickly. A good lesson. But, I also told her that she wasn't just going to have access to hundreds of dollars at a time, even if she did earn it. She looked at me like I was crazy . . . and said as much too. "We're going to have to know what your planning to spend your money on," I explained. "I know how to manage my money," she declared. I laughed at her. "You didn't even know how to turn that piece of paper into cash!" She didn't get it, and left pretty irritated with me. Of course, as I am apt to do, I exaggerated the point a bit: I told her at her age, her money is my money. That was a little strong. What I meant to say is:

Even a little bit of wisdom will show you that money is a potentially dangerous thing. A good parent wouldn't expose their children to dangers on purpose, would they? Yet, we dismiss money training too often and easily, I think. As much as you need training driving a car, you need training even more in dealing with money. The proven dangers of money? It's been known to breed addictions, cause divorces and broken families (my pet peeve), blur judgement and generally cause trouble. Unhealthy management of money is habitual, according to everything I can find on the topic (as is healthy management of money). Poor management of money has even been proven to be a generational curse on some families. Have you ever seen someone with an unhealthy emotional approach to spending and saving? It has literally devastating effects sometimes, leading to unhealthy dependencies that mess up orderly Spiritual and human relationships. All started with bad habits. So, yes, I am going to be very hands-on with my kids' money, even when they earn it . . . especially as teenagers. Now is the time to make sure Lauren has healthy habits and pereceptions with money. She's already started pretty well: by having a job, her brain will soon make the connection between work and money. I think if you give kids money incessantly (or the things money provides), they don't make that link between work and money. We've seen those adults who never made that link, right? Now, she has to learn how to "have" money. To become a steward of a blessing. It's hard. And, she needs our help. Hands on help, at first. That's what I was trying to tell her. We'll have to teach her that she doesn't really "know how to manage her money" until she understands:
  • Tithing and saving (10 - and - 10 rule)
  • Emotional spending
  • Time Value of Money (since time is actually worth more than amount in the money world, the sooner you learn it the better off you will be). The whole banking and financing industry is built on this, and it works for individuals too.

Cha - ching.

Getting Better . . . Some Updates . . .

By Chris
Well, our last entry should have been a clue about what has happened to us. We got sick! Blogging is not really on your mind when you're sick, so . . .

But, we seem to be getting better, though I am exhausted already at 2 p.m.

Some rambling and updates from the last several days . . .

Saw a funny thing . . . Santa will be at Hooters this weekend, with gifts for kids! Uhh. I guess the sentiment there is something like: "Happy Birthday Jesus! We're taking the kids to Hooters!!" Great Day . . .

Ben is doing a demo tonight at Karate for Christ's Christmas dinner at Deep Creek Baptist Church.

It turns out our Guatamalan friend Marian will be staying with us a couple more nights before she heads back home (we'll take her to the airport bright and early Sunday). We're glad to have her back, and she will get to experience another family gathering with us since the Dyers from Warrenton (Teresa's uncle, wife and kids) will be in town, and we will celebrate Christmas early with them.

Lauren got her first paycheck last week . . . and without our help she has not figured out how to convert it to cash. That's a good savings plan, I guess. We'll open her an account soon.

Finally, some drug learnings:
I bought Excedrin for the first time recently. Did you know that stuff has caffeine in it? Makes me sort of hyper. Weird feeling, when you think your just taking aspirin. Oh, and they are HUGE. Back to Advil for me.

Nyquil has changed their antihistimine ingredient. It doesn't knock you out nearly as thoroughly as before. Not sure that is good news.

sickies

by teresa
Today I was at Ben's school. They had a lot of work for me to do while I was at the desk. So the time flew by. Next week I will be there everyday to help out with the santas workshop (kids bring in money to buy family gifts). While working the desk the nurse marched Ben by me. He had a bloody nose. He gets these all the time, so it wasn't that big of a deal. He does however have some major congestion. I gave him some cough medicine before he left for school this morning. He was coughing terribly all night. I asked him if he wanted to stay home with me...but of course he refused. He loves school too much! He doesn't want to mess up his perfect attendance. Not long after returning home, I got a call from Nick's school. He was in the nurses office with a headache and a temperature (100.4). So I had to go get him. I hope he doesn't get worse. The nurse said alot of kids have been out this week, and they all started out with symptoms like Nick's. I bet one or both of them will end up having to stay home tomorrow. That should be fun!

B.C.

by teresa
When we were driving in the car today I heard Nick ask Ben..."do you know what B.C. means?" "Like 200 B.C."
Ben of course said....Yes, I know what that means! What?..Nick asked. To which Ben said.."Big Cat" I thought I would never stop giggling!

Christmas Bling Bling

Mom's house

Chuck and Geri's house (they even have speakers outside with music playing)

Christmas lights

by teresa
I took the boys out to look at christmas lights tonight. I surprised them. At 7:30pm, when I usually get them in the shower, I said ,"get your shoes on....we are going out." They were sooooo excited! I stopped at 7eleven and got them hot chocolate and a donut each. And off we went. We went up and down all the streets in our neighborhood and then out to a house on kempsville that has about a hundred plastic light up characters on the lawn. We blared the christmas music most of the time....except when the boys took turns serenading me with rudolph the red nose reindeer. Ben kept messing up near the end of the song and starting back over again. Aaarrrggg! I thought Nick would explode waiting for his turn to sing. We were gone for an hour and then we came home and the boys climbed right into bed. And all is right in the world. (from "A Christmas Story")

long day

by teresa
Lauren just got home from school...cheering practice...and work. She left for school at 7:45am and got home at 10:20pm. She looks like shes been run over. So of course I had to take a picture.

Yikes! That's some pretty hair right there! She's eating dinner and then going up to do her homework. I bet she sleeps good tonight!

Kaden update

by teresa
Kaden went for her FOUR month checkup last week. They told us what we have suspected for awhile now......she is a chunky monkey! And I love it! That's the way a baby should be. She is now 14lbs 4 ozs. She is in the 75% for height and weight. She is healthy and perfect. Isn't she adorable?

Narnia is coming!

by teresa
We are so excited about the Lion the witch and the wardrobe coming out in two days. Nick and I have just reread the book and we are soooo ready for the movie. We have the vhs of the 1970's cartoon version. But this is going to be epic, like Lord of the rings and harry potter epic! JOY! I will wait and take the kids to the evening viewing instead of the midnight showing like we did for GOF(thats goblet of fire for you muggles). That was a killer!(but worth it)

karate class

by teresa
Last nights karate class was very cool. They learned two ways to get away from kidnappers. One...if they try to drag you off by the wrist (this involved stepping on feet, falling down, wrapping around the leg , sitting on foot and biting the back of the knee)and two...if they throw you over their shoulder(this involved grabbing the back, climbing down the leg upside down, flipping to your butt, and running). All the kids were thrilled with this and really got into it(especially the biting part). Poor sensei Kim. Another exciting thing happening at the dojo is the return of sensei Scott. He is a total cutie who went away to college (sigh) and is now returning as a full time teacher in Jan. They said it was because the head instructor Soke broke his leg and they need him to pick up they slack, but I know different. All the moms got together and signed a petition to bring him home. Class just isn't the same without him. Hee hee!

dryer

by teresa
My dryer is now working. Southland came and fixed it. It was all a little lint ball around the motors fault. Whatever....as long as it works now!

All washed up and no place to go!

by teresa
I don't think I have blogged about this yet. We have been without a dryer for over a week now. It went kaploowee last Monday. I called Southland(where we but ALL our appliances..(THEY ARE THE CHEAPEST AND THE BEST) and they were so backed up with appointments, their technician couldn't come out until today. I almost cried with the lady on the phone. I wash between 2 to 3 loads of clothes a day(if I am caught up). So this has been a real henderence! I have washed some tubs and taken them next door to my mothers to put in her washer. I tried not to do this everyday(maybe every other day). I can't wait until they come. I am having to miss work today to wait for them. But it's worth it to get back to drying! Southland...Southland.....where for art thou Southland?

changed my mind

by teresa
I changed my mind about taking Chris to the airport. I decided that Lauren should get up and take him since it would be her that needed the car. I know that may sound mean to you, but.....that's a good lesson for her. If you want the reward...you have to make the sacrafice! And she did! She took him, and got home and went back to bed for awhile. Now I don't have to run myself ragged criss crossing town to get all three kids to their commitments. Lauren has a car....and I have a car. At least until Friday.

6:00am?

by teresa
Because Chris' flight was cancelled he had to switch it to tomorrow. Of course the only flight that would get him there for his meeting is the 6:00am. Which means he has to be there by 5:00am. That is so early. I am taking him so Lauren(who has a busier schedule than the president) can use his car while he is gone this week.

we are shopping...shopping BUY..BUY..BUY!

by teresa
Today I met Jackie at Walmart to do some Christmas shopping for the kids our church is sponsoring. We had 12, so we split up the list and went to it. Each kid got about 3 toys (all from a list their cargivers provided) and a coat and outfit. It only took us about 5 hours. Jackie is also purchasing rack room gift cards for each of them. I can't wait until Saturdays Christmas lunch to watch them all open the gifts. I think there about 50 kids or so. Each of the kids have parents who are incarcerated. When the volunteers wrap the gifts(which will be thursday night) they put From: Dad or From:mom (whoever is in jail) and the kids get excited to think that their parent is thinking of them eventhough they are apart. Chris and I are sponsoring a table (I encourage each of you who read this to do the same). And Nick has once again been asked to help in the kitchen by the adults in charge of the afternoon. He really enjoys this so much. So I hope nobodys feathers get too ruffled by his participation. :) Anyway...now I need to get it in gear and finish shopping for my own family.

Chesapeake Christmas Parade

by teresa
Saturday, when Chris and Nick went to the Old Dominion b-ball game, I took Ben, Katy, Kristian and Kai to the parade in Great Bridge. It was freezing and crowded. But, we got a primo spot right at the corner of battlefield and Cedar road. I think everybody enjoyed it alright. Although Kai asked to go sit in the car about 30 minutes before it was over(he was a little under the weather). Here are some pics. The kids enjoying themselves(they brightened up after Katy walked across the street and got pizza from little ceasars), and the shopping cart some lady was pushing around selling dollar tree christmas paraphernalia.

the christmas post

by teresa
Friday and Saturday both Lauren and Nick were in the church play. They have been practicing a long time with it and I think it turned out pretty cute. I also had a role in putting it on. No....not acting or singing, I was the copy person. which just means I sit up front and read along with the actors (in my head) and feed them a line when they forget them. It happened several times both nights. We have one more show on Dec. 11th. Here are some pics. One of Lauren on her 1940's get up and one of Nick dressed up like a newsie (I found him shooting pool in a sunday school room...what are they teaching my kids in church theses days?)

Stay or Go?

By Chris
In order to keep my car available for the week, Teresa dropped me at the
airport early this morning. I'm still here! They say a battery is dead,
and ther is no replacement in this part of the world, apparently. They're
funny how they handle these things. About 20 minites before depart time,
the first announcemt came. Never a good sign. “We'll be delayed about 10
mins. ... But we will get back to you with an update”. When an airline rep
says we'll get back to you with an update, that is relly code speak for
“you folks with any experience ought to get on your phone and re-book
before all 175 on the plane figure out we are in trouble”. Now it's a game.
Do I take a chance and switch to the next flight, 2 hours later? That
could backfire, if this one is delayed less than 2 hours. I decide to wait
a minute. Wrong move.
The “get back to you in a minute”. Turned into, “we're looking for a
battery, it could take several hours” Darn! Now all 175 are in line. No
need for me to do that. They will rebook me automatically on something.
No way that all the people are getting on the next Atlanta flight, which is
probably full already. I've put Teresa on hold to come get me. Everyone
is on cell phones trying to out-maneuver each other (it's usually quicker
to call the airline from your cell phone than to stand in line). They're
not answering though. So, I sit and wait. Now it is getting interesting,
because the 10 am flight crowd is arriving, and people are telling them
“the flight to Atlanta is delayed.”. Well, it's not THAT one that is
delayed. Now they are getting in line too, for no reason. It's becoming
very likely that I could now drive to Atlanta before this gets sorted out.
Because, even if they get the battery for the plane here by 2, they will
surely cancel this flight to get that plane back on track. But they are
not telling us that yet.

Adios Marian. Nosotros le perderemos tanto

by teresa
Last night was Marians b-day/goodbye party at church. Today she will be traveling to North Carolina with The Hoyles (missionaries from our church), they will be attending a family reunion Christmas get together. Our family really enjoyed having her in our home. She is such a sweetie! And...with her around the boys were on extra good behavior. All the teenagers came to the party. She gots loads of cards (she said she was going to hang them in her room back home), gifts and money. She looked alittle overwhelmed...but happy. Phyllis Lowry(mom of another family who hosted her) and I got pictures together and made a scrapbook for her. It included pictures of all the things she has done in America...and all the people she met. It also has a voice recorder on it(enough for 12 messages). So we were all able to tell her how much we love her and will miss her. When she gets home, she can still have our voices....and her parents can see and hear the people she was involved with here.

what I'm thankful for......by Ben

by teresa
Yesterday Ben's teacher sent home the thanksgiving art that had been up in her room. It was a picture of what they were thankful for. I thought Ben's was interesting. It's nice to see how he ranks whats important to him.
