Happy Birthday Chris!
Today is Chris' birthday.
A day after mom's...making it very easy to remember.
We will celebrate this evening with him at Upward evaluations and me at a school skating party.
For his gift, I have arranged for the NCAA tournament to begin this week....I am a good wife.

what's the haps?
Lauren has now officially moved out (the cot scheme worked). She is sharing an apartment with another woman from work and is planning to go back to school in the fall. Here's hoping! She texts me each night to tell me she is going to bed.
Nick had his festival band competition this morning. After months of tryouts, practices and four boxes of earplugs for the family, it has come to an end. Their performance was amazing and we (me, chris, ben, nanny jackie and nanny allen) cheered the loudest. What a gift he has in music. Now, if we can just get him on track in Algebra, I can stop the math tutor and switch to trumpet lessons. I can only imagine how much better he would play with a private instructor.
Ben has been obsessed with two things lately, reading and math. Why? Because it is a competition at school...why else? He is trying to earn 150 accelerated reader points by the end of the year so he can go on a special trip. He has about 80 and has kicked it in to high gear now he has entered the third quarter of the school year. We checked out every playaway (book on mp3) the library had and he goes to bed listening to it. Sounds like a good plan to me. The math obsession began this week when the school gave each kid an activation code to get on a First In Math website. You do different levels of math problems and earn points for each level correct. The scores are shown for the whole school to see and Ben must be #1. I have to pry him off the computer to go to soccer, dinner and bed. Then I noticed he had hooked up his wii to the internet and was playing it in his room when I thought he was asleep. We certainly never had this problem with the other children.
Chris has been busy getting our churches first Upward soccer league up and running. The evaluations were today and it seems to be a hit. I can't wait for the first games to begin in the next few weeks. We may even sign up Kaden, if he needs players on a kindergarten team. That will be a hoot.
This Monday is the third year that I have been involved making Easter eggs with the women's ministry. I am looking forward to spending my days with the ladies, it is truly my favorite time of the year.

questions and comments heard in the green house this week
Who blew it up upstairs?
No one has been up there for hours.
Well, then I think the hamster farted.
Why is there a tape measurer in the bathroom?
Nevermind, I don't want to know.
I put him on restriction from doing math, then he snuck upstairs and did some anyway.
We never had this problem with the other children.
Can we flip the mattress or something, I have a divot going on over here.
When did we become the people who sleep with their dog?
I think sissy has changed.
What do you mean?
She is nice now.
Nothing turns a husband on more than a wife that smells like peanut butter.
I ate the stroganoff for four meals in a row....dinner, breakfast, lunch and then dinner again. It was sooo good.

don't make me mad or I will hit you with my chair!
This weekend Ben has a soccer tournament.
It's in Chesapeake...way out in the boonies of Chesapeake.
Not my Chesapeake. The Target, mall having, Olive Garden Chesapeake.
It's in the cow pasture, trailer hauling, corn shuckin' Chesapeake.
Big difference.
Yesterday, the team lost both games (not a fun night here at the Green house).
We entered the tournament to test the waters in the next level of soccer.
Ben is in advanced. The next is Travel. More money, more traveling and more intense.
And apparently more than our boys can handle.
These teams are amazing, and we hope to work up to that level in the next year.
Two more games today . Hopefully, they come out with at least one win to make up for all the blood, sweat and tears from yesterday.
(actually, the only blood was from me hitting one of the kids in the face with my soccer chair. I felt sooooo bad.)

dream a little dream of me
Crawling out of my sick cave for the first time in days.
Still pretty tired and achy, but the nausea and fever seems to have passed.
Things I dreamed in a fevered haze:
Lauren married an Aborigine and lived in a hut with lots of kids that wore no clothes (I was upset because I had bought some cute things from Old Navy for them to wear for a family picture).
Ben and Nick were taking lessons (I don't know what kind) from one of the characters from XMEN (I don't know names, but it's the one that can't see and has laser beam eyes).
All our cars broke and instead of getting them fixed I told Chris I had a horse and buggy I had been saving for just such an occasion (I fell asleep last night watching Oklahoma).

should I be worried?
My teenage son vacuumed his room last night.
Emptied his trash, made his bed, put his clothes on the washer....and vacuumed.
All without being told.
Something is up.
am I being punked?

hamster funny
Had two funny hamster comments this week.
The first was at MOPS. Our craft was to make scented sachets for our dresser drawers. It went along with our speaker from The Full Cup, who came in to talk about the importance of having the correct fitting bra (no uni-boob or butt-crack boob...both of which I have all the time). Anyway, we were making sachets. The coordinator told me she had forgot to get scented chips to put inside the decorated bags. She sent her husband out late the night before to pick some up. He came home with cedar smelling hamster cage shavings. Too funny.
So the ladies spent time stamping, painting and lacing ribbons on these pretty silk pouches. Once filled, they brought them to the tables for all to admire, ready to take them home and place in their intimates drawer.
Then one woman said, "Just what I always wanted...hamster crotch."
I have giggled about this all night.
Last night before bed, Ben fed Pooh (his hamster) and gave him a bit of attention. Then he went to put him in the hall closet. Why? He (Pooh) has been extra energized at night and has kept Ben up chewing his toys and running on his wheel. He grabbed up his cage, clutched it to his body and went down the hall. I hear, "OWWWW! OWWWW!"
Ben came back in half laughing and teary.
"What happened", I asked?
"My hamster gave me a titty twister", he replied.
Ben was shirtless when carrying the cage to the closet. I guess Pooh wanted to have his disapproval felt and gave B a bite on his "beep".

Forget Mary had a Little Lamb. How about The Allen's have a stupid dog?
Ben came home yesterday and told me that KiKi (mom's dog), followed him and Kristian to school that morning. All the way to the front door. The principal said, "there's a big dog outside!"
Oh my Lord?!
I would have been like, "I have no idea who's dog that is?"
Ben said she had the crossing guard in a tizzy. The guard was stopping cars for the kids to cross and KiKi was running in between the cars like a nut.
Ben and Kristian were so embarrassed.
This dog escapes the house daily, barks at the old lady who rides her bike through the neighborhood and terrorizes the kids at the bus stop.
I think she needs doggy downers.

olympic fever
I am so tired.
The Olympics are on and I find myself up at midnight (or later) to watch the competitions.
It's addicting.
What events do I like?
Anything!
They draw you closer to the athletes with touching life stories. Mom and dad giving up careers to move cross the world for the kid to train with the best. Handicap sibling, cheering from the sidelines. Near death accidents, surviving against all odds, now back to compete again.
Seriously, it doesn't matter what country they are from. I'm pulling for them all.
Ben and I are hyped for the US women's hockey gold medal match tomorrow night.

best conversation of the weekend
How'd you sleep last night?
Ok. Except for your farting.
I didn't fart.
Yes you did. You farted in your sleep.
I did NOT!
Well, if that wasn't farting, then your breath was really bad.

Parenthood: That state of being better chaperoned than you were before marriage.
With temps in the high 50's, we headed to the city park to run the boys (and dog) around in hopes of wearing them out. An early bed time for them, means alone couch time for mom and dad.
Basketball, football and the dog park made up our afternoon outing.
So much fun.
Chris and I were content to sit and watch the boys enjoying each other. That is, until Nick trash talked Chris about not being able to beat him on an "away" court. (Chris has beat him barely every time at home)
At the end of the game, Chris came out on top (the game had gone into overtime).
Dad was the one in bed by 8:30pm.

Let God's promises shine on your problems
Spent my prayer time in the hammock this morning.
Shorty wouldn't go out to the bathroom unless I accompanied him.
He was upset with me for waking him from his nap on my bed and just stood at the back door rolling his eyes at me.
Once out the door, the warm all over my body and face was just too wonderful to ignore.
It may be in the 30's, but the sun is shining bright enough to warm you inside and out.
So I climbed in the hammock and had a nice chat with my bff.
At the close of our conversation I heard the backdoor creak open.
"There you are mom!"
"I found you!"
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

I highly recommend the tuna tacos
Presidents day.
Chris was off, but the kids had a snow makeup day.
I had plans.
Movie, lunch out...
Unfortunately, the movie I wanted to see had start times after 1:00pm in all local theatres.
We would never make it home before Ben's arrival from school.
So we altered things.
We went to lunch at Olive Garden (in the hopes of catching a glimpse of our oldest offspring), then came home and took a two hour nap. We had an outstanding seafood dinner at Wicker's and then home to pajama's, the Olympics (even though I know it pains him to watch figure skating) and reading on the couch.
My favorite time of the day?
The reading together on the couch.
No, we didn't read to each other...we read our separate books (him The Help and me Redemption) and made comments about how all the figure skaters were busting their butts.
It was the perfect day.

I gave him a card that plays "I got you babe" and fuzzy love dice for his car
I couldn't have asked for a better Valentine's Day.
A gift?
Nope.
Just a day with the family (and they all just happen to be on their best behavior).
The highlight of the day was a Valentine's dinner put on by the youth of the church. Ben was a server, Nick worked in the kitchen and Kristian did childcare.
Escorted to the table, candlelight, three course meal, beautiful music and wonderful company. We also played the Newlywed Game, which I thought Chris and I would win hands down (cause I know my man and he knows me). I was wrong. We only got 7 out of 12 correct. But, we had a blast playing it.
Today, Chris is off (for Presidents day) but the kids have a makeup snow day.
That means I have him all to myself.
I am dragging him to a movie (Valentines Day) and then lunch.

questions and comments heard in the green house this week
Mom, nobody asked you to go in my room!
Mom is on the couch with her ipod and a book. I guess we are on our own tonight.
Where are my sports pants?
The ones you were yesterday?
Yes.
You got home after 11:00pm...they are on the washer to be washed.
Throw them up to me.
Ew. (picks them up carefully) You wore them all day.
(toss up to him)
(sniff)
They aren't too bad....I'm going to wear them today.
How old were sissy and Nick when they got their phones?
I would like a Va Tech couch for my birthday please.
Where did you go to eat? I found chili on your shirt.
Touch my neck.
I need to put this Olive Garden container on the back porch...it's polluting the house with it's garlic fumes. We could ward off vampires with this stuff.
Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the ground each morning, the devil says, "oh crap...she's up!"
I want a five star binder!
I don't care what you want. It's 10:00pm and you are getting whatever binder Walgreen's has. I don't care if it's got puppies on it...you're gonna use it and like it!

ear
Time has kinda stood still since the snow on Saturday.
Schools have been cancelled and tomorrow they are closed too.
Crazy!
You can tell this area is not used to having this kind of weather.
Seriously...you are out Wednesday from snow on Saturday?
The kids and I are bouncing off the walls.
Today Ben and I went to the library and the thrift store, just to get out of the house.
Nick and the youth group finally arrived home last night, having been snowed in at Accelerant.
He was exhausted and slept until afternoon today.
Then he got up, ate, watched tv and went back to bed until around 7:00pm.
You know you've had a good time when you have to sleep for two days to recover.
Tonight, Ben has Keagan and Joe over.
They are literally bouncing off the walls.
It is 12:47am and I hear them yelling cannonball...and then jumping from the top bunk. The dishes in the kitchen cabinets sound like they are breaking.
Why am I up, besides the hurricane of testosterone going on across the hall from my bedroom?
Ben burst through our door a few minutes ago. He and the boys were playing with this giant stuffed dog Ben has had for years. I had shoved it in the back corner of his toy closet long ago. Nostalgia? No. The thing cost like $100 bucks and I don't part with $100 stuffed animals without it being infested with rats or something. It has a rip in the seam and they were messing with the stuffing (it probably looks like it snowed in his room). Anyway, stuck inside Darby (the dog's name), was Ben's ear. For those of you not in our immediate family, I will elaborate. Ben called his "blankie"...ear. Because he twirled it and poked it in his ear while he sucked his pacifier. In 90% of the pictures of Ben before the age of 3, he had his "ear" by his side. I guess after he lost interest, he shoved it inside of Darby and forgot about it. Well, after discovering it, all these years later, he was excited enough to burst into our room and share the joy. At midnight.
So I came down to find my ipod and book light (so I can read without disturbing Chris). I am hiding in the office, in the dark for the moment (blogging and checking facebook). If they see I am up, it will draw them down like moths to a light. I will now sneak back up to bed with my book and a little music to tide me over until the sandman arrives.

is it or isn't it?
snow?
I think it might happen.
We haven't had snow accumulation in this area of Va. in years.
The weatherman is calling for up to 15inches.
The kids are bursting with anticipation (and don't even get me started on the hubby).
It better happen.
I bought a lantern (in case of power outage), cute polka dotted boots and pulled out all our hats/gloves/scarves from the hall closet.
Bring it on!
*Edited*
After I posted this I remembered the last time it snowed. I looked outside and saw my daddy walking house to house with his big broom and shovel. He was wearing his blue, lined jumpsuit over his clothes and he was shoveling all the neighbors walkways and sweeping the snow from all our cars. I have this on video somewhere, I think. When he noticed me taping him he laughed and made faces and told me to get back in the house or he was telling Chris (because I was out with no coat and he figured his tattling would get me in trouble).
*sigh*

“It is a very hard undertaking to seek to please everybody”
Up at 5:00am this morning (ugg).
Drove to church to send Nick off to Accelerant with the teens.
I know he will have a great time and pray for revival in their hearts and lives.
The weatherman said we are expecting snow this weekend.
That would be awesome. Haven't had a good snow in years.
Ben only has a half day of school today and then we are heading to Charlottesville for a basketball game. Anthony is coming with us and he is a huge UVA fan. They are playing VaTech, so Ben will be clad head to toe in all things Tech. Both boys have been bubbling about this since Chris bought the tickets a month ago.
Sissy slept in the bottom bunk last night. When I roused Ben this morning, I pointed out to him that his sissy was sleeping under him. He said," why did she have to sleep in my room?"
What??!?
He was the one mentioning that option night after night.
good grief.

exam week
I am being so mean!
At least that's what Nick says.
Or maybe he just called me ridiculous.
Why, you ask?
Because I am making him study for exams this week.
I know...I'm horrible...right?
hahaha
He comes down and sits by me on the couch...la-dee-da...like I didn't just threaten his life if he didn't crack open his science book two minutes earlier.
When I request that he return to his room, he looks at me with shock and awe.
"What mother dearest....you didn't request for me to lounge beside you on the couch for awhile (so I can secretly check the bball scores on ESPN when you get up to go to the bathroom)?"
Teenagers...you can't live with them...you can't live without them (who would cut your grass?)

benedryl anyone?
Pretty tired today.
Been sick with fever, stuffy head and coughing through the weekend. Not enough to keep me in bed, but definitely enough to keep me on zombie meds. It's either that, or I succumb to the sick and let the children take over (destroy) the house (Chris is out of town).
To add to my fun, the car began to leak a pretty red liquid on the driveway.
Not good. Not good at all.
An appointment is set for my baby (I sooo love my car) to be fixed and fly in no time.
Until then, I am grounded (except for emergency runs to 7-11 for vanilla lattes and nyquil).
Nick is very excited about his trip to Tennessee this weekend. It's a youth ministry weekend of speakers and concerts. It's called Accelerant and he is going to have the time of his life.
While he is gone, Chris and I are taking Ben and friend on the road to a UVA/Va. Tech basketball game. Should be a fun time.
Lauren has now slept in her new room for two nights. The first morning I had forgotten all about her in there. I went in the office and flicked on the lights (at 6:30am). Oops. Sorry sissy.
Ben has requested that she come upstairs and lay in the bottom bunk of his bed. He has been really excited about this prospect. I don't know why...but it's cute. He wakes in the morning and the first thing he says to me is,"Is sissy under me mom?" I told Lauren and I bet she surprises him soon.

A daughter is a little girl who grows up to be a friend.
I hugged my girl this weekend. And she hugged me back.
And we laughed and hugged and laughed and it was nice.
I don't remember what struck us so funny.
She is my friend now. Not my baby chick...but fellow hen.
One day that tiny baby will be your friend.
It's different, but good.
I love her.

he calls himself B the D (defense captain)!
Quick update on the Monarchs soccer team.
Four games down and four wins.
Ben has scored in each game and continues to be this aggressive lion on the field and floppy haired lamb as the whistle blows. I keep trying to get video if this so I can show you, but somehow my video skills are lacking. I seem to capture everyone on the team except Ben. Next Saturday I am determined to shoot some blog worthy footage.

go hokies
Movie night at B's school tonight.
Watching UP (that movie makes me cry).
I hope there is a full house.
You are supposed to wear pajamas...but Ben refuses.
He said he would only participate if I bought him Va.Tech pajamas.
His birthday is next month and all he wants is Tech stuff.
He gets on the computer and "favorites" things (and then calls us in to see what he has favorited). A watch, curtains, rug, chair, wall art and even a Va. Tech couch.
He is obsessed for sure.

work in progress
I'm getting there.
The boys room is done.
Lauren's new room (downstairs office) is done.
Nick's new room is about 10% done.
All the old furniture is emptied and Lauren's things are in one of four places. Downstairs put away, in the trash , stored for future use in the attic or dropped off at goodwill. I have called for a bulk pickup, so tomorrow her and I will move all the furniture to the curb. Then I will assess the damage to the carpet and walls. I'm pretty sure the carpet will need to be replaced. In case I have not mentioned it recently, Lauren is a slob. So any room she has lived in, especially for the past 10 years, will need some major overhauling. And since I don't think hot pink and purple are Nick's colors...the walls will need painting.
Painting...my least favorite thing to do.
The next month or so should be exhausting, but the end result will be wonderful.
Three kids, in three rooms, with as little interaction with each other as I can possibly manage.

You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them. ~Michael Jordan
Up late with Ben tonight, putting the finishing touches on his civil war slave journal.
Soaked the pages in tea and then dried them in the microwave. Smelled like burnt feet in the house for a hour or so...but achieved the old, yellowed effect he was going for. He did a great job....and wouldn't let me help. That annoys me. Our other two would gladly let you take charge of any project they had. Lazy kids with a mom trying to achieve that A in school that was always beyond her effort. Truth is...I was lazy too. Ask my mom about the civil war project "we" did together when I was in school. She was up all night painting a confederate uniform on my Star Wars action figure.
Ben is different. In his mind, no one can do it better than him (including mom and dad). The "it" being just about anything. Run, read, soccer, sing, school work, etc.
In Ben's world, the little engine wouldn't say, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." It would scream, "I got this! I got this! I got this! Move out the way!"

things heard in the Green house this week

“How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on”
Went to Sams today.
Love that place (cheesecakes for $10)!
I had to use the restroom while I was there, but as I approached there was a sign stating it was being cleaned. Before I walked up I barely had to go...but once you are denied access....with no notice of how long it will take....the urge grows stronger.
Some old lady and I stood there doing the "pee pee" dance for ten minutes, while this minimum wage earning kid slapped enough water/cleaner on the floor with his stinky mop, to sink the titanic. I think he was rushing because, aforementioned old lady kept kicking open the door and yelling that,"I HAVE TO GO ALOT BECAUSE OF MY MEDICATION...SO GET OUT!!!".
The young man stared a whole in his feet as he squeezed out the door with his cart-o-Lysol and big yellow sign. By this time there was a long line. Me and five additional elderly women who have medication induced bathroom emergencies. Did I let them go first? Nope. When you have to go you have to go. And besides...I was there first. No cutsies allowed (I'm sure I saw a sign that read something like that).
The floor was so wet, that I almost busted my butt twice before entering the stall. I think it was God punishing me for not showing respect to my elders. Of course I picked the one stall that had a broken lock....and no purse hook. The floor was seriously dripping wet, so I could not set my purse down (ewwww). I had also wore my new, black scarf. The loooong one. The one that when I sit, touched the floor. Good grief....can nothing be easy?
So I wrapped the scarf around my head a couple times like the red baron, gnashed my purse between my teeth, sat down with one leg up (stretching with all my short person might) to pin the door closed. Cause you know those old ladies can't see and would snatch that door open on me in mid tinkle. I actually giggled out loud, looking down at myself and how completely insane I looked. I won't get into details about *ahem* wiping. Just picture the same scene, except with my forehead pressing against the door to prohibit peeping.
I will definitley go before I leave the house from now on.

anything for peace and harmony
Oh my goodness, is it cold.
I don't think we have had temps. this low, for this long, in years.
Hopefully we will get some snow out of it.
I actually bought gloves. And wear them. With a coat and scarf.
If you know me...you know that's not the norm. Even in the dead of winters, my cold weather garb usually consists of some kind of sweatshirt/turtleneck/jacket combo. Never a coat and gloves.
I did get the most fabulous scarf in the obx this summer and I have been happy to add it to the mix.
I finished the boys room yesterday. Bunk beds back together, toy bins cleaned out, walls washed and bedding cleaned. It is such a huge room with the beds together. The boys were thrilled and spent most of the night up there, together, not yelling, breaking things or throwing shoes at each other. It was a miracle. A miracle that took me 7 hours, two broken finger nails, a bruised foot, a ripped bra strap (don't ask), 3 Tylenol and a tack in my foot to complete. It was well worth it.

trading spaces
In the process of moving spaces around.
From one closet, to garage and attic spaces...from one room into two rooms. I've been tackling one space each day.
At the end of it all...the boys will be separated and Lauren will be residing in the office/bedroom downstairs. We had an epiphany the other night. Why does the person who is here the least, have the largest room in the house? So Lauren has been downgraded. Well, not yet...but it's coming. Slowly, but surely. Today's project? Putting the boys bunkbeds back together. It will give Ben more room and Nick will get sissy's bed once he claims that space. What will sissy sleep on? Her and I looked online at some foldaway options and she is actually happy about decluttering and organizing her life.

do you think Ben would go for it?

more of the same please
A New Year has come...pretty quietly too.
For the first time since I can remember, I was asleep when the ball dropped.
Resolutions and promises?
None.
Just live for and love on and be loved by.
God, family, friends and those who are placed in my life (if even for a moment).
Sounds simple to me.
"Youth is when your allowed to stay up on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when your forced to."

enough with the whistling!
I took Ben out to spend his Christmas money today. He ended up only parting with $5.
What did he buy?

If you loose your keys...you whistle...the key chain then sounds an alarm to help you locate the missing keys.
Perfect for him...don't you think?

daquiri anyone?
Smoothie maker....a good time for all.
Bought one before Christmas, to complete our perfectly planned Christmas morning breakfast of homemade waffles and smoothies. It was delish.
Ben has a friend over and we just broke it out again.
The perfect late night snack.
Strawberry, pineapple, raspberry and orange juice smoothie (with a touch of whipped cream on top).

You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.
The day was perfect.
Family together (from morning to night)....we laughed the day away.

Christmas Eve morning
So excited.

the countdown begins
What a week.
*phew*
Commitments are all behind me...except for all the fun stuff.
Ben has an indoor soccer tournament this weekend.
Short, quick, exciting games.
Only two days of school left, both of which have parties, dessert day and a sing-a-long scheduled (except for poor Nick who has a project due).
I need to sneak over to mil's house to wrap gifts sometime before next Friday. Her house is our hiding place (far from prying eyes). Hey Jackie...when can I come over and escape visit?
Ben's teacher, Mr. C., went exploring the school the other night (before parents arrived for the music concert). He found a fully decorated Christmas tree in an attic and brought it down to display in his room. Ben raved about it and the kids put extra lights and garland all over it. The next morning, while Ben was on safety patrol he heard an alert over the pa system. "IF ANYONE KNOWS THE WHERE ABOUTS OF MS. BALL'S DECORATED CHRISTMAS TREE PLEASE COME TO THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY!" Just then, Mr. Carmody came out of the men's room. He looked and Ben and said, "oh no B...we've been caught!"
He delivered it to it's rightful owner, gushing with apologies (she was snitty and it irked him).
Later in the day he announced to the class, "I don't like to lose....let's go!" So off the class snuck (the entire class). Down the halls up secret staircases (which are totally off limits to students) and into the inner sanctum of the schools storage areas. They searched high and low for another tree. They ended up finding two (one big and one little). The first they brought down was mammoth, and once put together wouldn't fit in the room. So they dragged it back and got the small one. They put it on a desk, skirted it (Ben said it looks more like a table cloth) and decorated away. But it was so much smaller than the original one, that they had an abundance of decorations leftover. What to do? They got a ladder and hung lights from the ceiling tiles and the girls strung garland everywhere. He even let B string lights out the door and down the hall.
Who knew Ben's illumination obsession would be of use in academia?

the weekend can not come soon enough
I am always triple busy around this time of year.
No time for blogging, reading or cooking (my three favorite things).
MOPS, church functions, Christmas shop at Ben's school, band concert, board meetings, soccer practice, basketball practice, etc. All things I love, but when combined, suck the life out of me.
The end of this week will bring sweet relief.

band geeks rule
Nick had his "winter" band concert at school tonight.
Chris was out of town until late evening, so I went solo.
It was the usual seasonal song lineup.
Jingle bells, rockin' around the Christmas tree, etc.
After each piece the crowd would give a little clap.
Then they played *get this* Jesus Loves Me.
Jesus. Loves. Me......and it was so beautiful. Soft, intimate and then building up and powerful.
I didn't breathe the entire song. People all around me were singing and humming along. I cried. I was so proud (Nick had told me the director had told them to keep the playlist a secret to surprise the parents).
When the song came to an end most of the crowd leapt to their feet, applauding and cheering.
Take Christ out of schools? Ha!!

The cashier at the thrift store asked me if I was 55.
"There's a great discount for seniors", she said.

give until it hurts?
Up early this morning to get ready for the MOPS Christmas party.
I can't believe it is almost Christmas.
I have done about half of our shopping.
Just Nick and Ben left on my list.
Luckily, we (Jackie, Mom and I) go lots of things checked off in the OBX.
My theme this year?
"You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give."
It's funny, when I had the least (money), I gave the most. Towers of gifts for the kids, most of which they hardly ever used. It was space filler...."look how many gifts you have!" But, when you actually have a lot to give, you are more thoughtful about the things you buy.
Maturity, I guess.

whistle while you....
Ben learned how to whistle this week.
*sigh*
In the car.
From his bed at night.
At the grocery store.
It annoys the dickens out of me. I lost it in Food Lion, snapped at him and scared the man walking beside us. Not one of my best parenting moments.
I'm gonna start walking around with my ipod in to save my sanity.

•"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will."
Re-read my favorite book of all time this week.
Jane Eyre.
Funny...I was assigned this book in high school to read and write a research paper on.
I only read through the first couple of chapters (under duress) and squeaked out some generic report. Why do we only like to do things under our own free will?
I picked it up later in life and fell in love.
What is your favorite book and what age did you read it?

got socks?
Got a call today while I was out.
It was Ben.
"Mom, can you bring me some clothes?"
At recess, he was running and slipped in the mud.
I ran up to school (with a clean outfit) and found him sitting in the office waiting.
By the looks of him, the mud puddle was 3 feet deep.
He was soaked from head to toe.
On the phone he had just said to bring pants and a shirt.
We changed in the bathroom and I felt bad because his sock were dripping...and I had not brought clean ones.
Can you imagine how uncomfortable that would be for the rest of the day?
So I did what any good mom would do. I gave him mine.
Unfortunately for Ben, I had wore my brown/green/orange argyle socks today.
He reluctantly slid them on and prayed (aloud) that there would be nothing in his teachers lesson that involved taking his shoes off for the rest of the day.

let the lights shine
Ben has channeled his inner Clark Griswold again this year.
It clicked in as we pulled up from Thanksgiving vacation and our neighbor had put up some of her decorations. It was a slap in the face...a challenge. She was first....and he likes to be first. So he vowed to be better.
He dragged out all our decorations, with the help of big brother and so it began.
Christmas lights 2009!
He walked around muttering things like, "I have a vision" and "we need more chords!"
Eight hours, three stores (Walmart, Garden Ridge and Walgreens) and ten chords later, he was done. Well not completely, his "vision" has a Charlie Brown manger scene around our front tree. That $60 shout out to baby Jesus is still sitting at Garden Ridge (I'm so mean).
The two of us sat on the porch last night. Me, staring at the hideous spaghetti of extension chords across all parts of my front lawn....him, reveling in the glory that only proper exterior illumination can give.
A car drove by...very slowly. He squealed as they drove off and said, "they were pointing at my candy canes!".
too funny.

like a gift from God
While cleaning out the fridge last night, I found an entire cheesecake. Apparently, Katy made a cheesecake (along with pies and spoon bread) for thanksgiving. When she arrived she must have put it in the fridge until after dinner. Once we were done eating (gorging ourselves) we shoved all the leftovers all around it. I think someone thought it was Jackie's cranberry sauce and was trying to hide it. (sorry Jackie...I couldn't resist)
When I discovered it last night, the crowds (hungry relatives coming down from their carb high) went wild.
Peace:
It does not mean to be in a place
where there is no noise, trouble
or hard work. It means to be in the
midst of all those things and still
be calm in your heart (with a huge piece a cheesecake in front of you).

bliss
You know how Julie Andrews feels running to the top of the mountain, arms widespread, singing with total joy and satisfaction? That's how I feel at this exact moment. My wonderful husband (yes, he's leapt to a new level of champion in my heart) surprised me with a the new HP TouchSmart. It moved me to tears...seriously. I have been having serious blog/facebook/email withdraws. It was really bad. A & E's Intervention bad. I had replaced my usually creative outlet with cooking and baking...ten-fold. I think I gained 5 pounds this week from the cupcakes (oh...the cupcakes...two batches), london broil, gnocchi, prime rib, tilapia, chicken, pasta and more I have hashed out this week.

Something About The Ted
Computer is jacked up . . . so Teresa is severely blog handicapped for the moment. So, here goes . . .
It's college basketball season. More specifically, it's ODU Basketball season. My favorite time of year. Nick, Ben and I go to every game . . . with my old college roomies. A few weeks ago, I was telling Teresa ... "There's something special about that place . . . the boys fight everywhere else, but once we get there, they never fight. They fight at home, they fight at the football games, they fight in the car. They fight EVERYWHERE! But, not there. You would think they're best buddies. I'm telling you, it's special!" She probably thought I was over-selling. She NEVER goes to basketball games, and probably thinks my commitment to them is a bit much. She reminds me that I've missed anniversaries for them, and once went to a tournament with her still bed-resting from a baby delivery. But, she went this Saturday. The boys were giddy that mom was going to finally see how awesome it is at The Ted (she'd never seen a game there). Nick even gave up his Big Blue Club Room priveledges for the night so she could get the full experience, complete with free Diet Coke and entering through the "special door." Ben showed her "what to do." For him, that means, get one drink, sip it down while mingling, then double fist two more to take into the arena, check out the players warming up and sit down in time to see the mascot Big Blue make his grand entrance. On cue, with the car in "park" next to the arena, the fighting stopped, and Mom got to witness the "special-ness" As always, Nick scoped out courtside seats on the other side of the arena in the first half, and moved to them, texting me at halftime to send Ben over when it looked all clear (that is, nobody was showing up to throw them out). And, as usual, they sat together for the whole second half alone. I could tell she was waiting for the eruption, and thinking I had lost my mind for letting them do that sort of thing together . . . alone. It never happened . . . As always, they watched, cheered, danced and laughed together. In the car, mom looked at me, and said: "You're right. It's amazing!" In the back seat, the fighting commenced. We laughed. Now Mom's a basketball believer.

I sing because I'm happy
We found the dog a home and I am so happy. After putting the word out on facebook, I had almost a hundred comments and emails. People praying, asking neighbors and offering support in finding her a home. What a wonderful thing.
Someone told me that God led her to our bushes, knowing we would love her and facilitate her homecoming.
If He loves a stray mutt that much...can you even fathom how much he cares for us?

Lost Dog

This dog (Ben named her Sandy) was found by the Terminix man, sleeping under our bushes after the Nor'Easter. We had seen her roaming the neighborhood before that. When KiKi would get out, this dog would come home with her. When you would go outside to see her, she would run off. She is now residing in our garage until we can find her a home (ours is full...in case your wondering:). She has a boo boo on her lip and a scratch in her ear, obviously due to riding out the storm unsheltered. She is so sweet and loving and kind to the children. If you know of anyone who can give her a loving home...please message me. I just don't have the heart to call the pound.
“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”

what a mess
The rain that began Wednesday morning is still going strong.
Last night we had hurricane force wind gusts most of the night.
It sounded like the house was going to blow away and left us in the dark all night long.
Around here that translates into NO SLEEP. Gotta have the fan going to find the sandman.
I came downstairs on the couch (cause nothing is more annoying than listening to people breathe), lit a candle and read some of Nicholas Sparks new book. I dozed a minute here and there and then around 4:00am the power came back on. I was sound asleep by 4:01am.
We are all up now (Chris left for work) and I am desperate to get out of this house. If it ever stops raining, we will depart for nature walk around the neighbor and take pictures of the damage and flooding. I did stick my head out the back door and took pictures of our backyard. What a mess! There are chairs and soccer balls floating in the over full pool and our table and chairs are a mangled mess. We were so lucky though. Some of my facebook friends in the neighborhood have trees down (on their cars) and flooded garages.

get it, read it, love it
A friend (thank you Jackie) dropped off a couple off books for me to read yesterday.
One of which is Mitch Albom's (Tuesday's with Morrie, The Five People you Meet in Heaven, etc.) newest book called Have a Little Faith. I started it tonight (and finished it tonight) and it was so wonderful. It is a uniquely and profoundly meditative, contemplative, stimulating and inspiring story. I highly recommend it.
rain rain go away come...blah blah blah
When I woke this morning it was pouring and as I sit here, moments before heading to bed it is still pouring. So much so, that schools are closed tomorrow due to flooding. I have one thing to say about that....crap.
After two days (teacher workday and veterans day) of people using "my time" for "their time" I am about to go coo coo for cocoa puffs. *that actually sounds good right now*
I will borrow my in laws canoe and personally row through the neighborhood picking up children and delivering them to the school steps to get a moment of solitude tomorrow.

keep 'em busy
The kids were off today (teacher workday), so Katy and I took them to the bowling alley, so they wouldn't tear up the house.
We had the lanes to ourselves, but that didn't mean any less work for the employees. With nine kids in tow, we had to make multiple calls for stuck balls, broken bumpers, lost money in the video games and other annoyances. I'm sure they also loved the many, many times the kids kept pushing the call button for no reason at all. We were just keeping them on their toes...right?

what's the 'haps?
Busy at the Green homestead.
Not a lot of blogging going on.
Yes, the kids are still doing stupid stuff...we just haven't had time to document.
Chris says facebook is killing my blog.
True...I do usually update my status instead of writing out a lengthy story.
Yesterday, on Oprah, a sweet childhood friend was selected as a finalist in her karaoke contest.
Donnie Denny, grew up across the street from us and I do not remember a time when this boy was not singing. He would bring his tape recorder to our house and belt out a tune on the spot. What kid has the guts to do that? Our family gathered around the TV and watched him...his interview was so touching and may have a brought a tear or two to those in the room. Today's Oprah will announce the top three finalist who move on. I pray he is one of them.
It is so cold outside right now. 42 degrees. I love it!
And.....I haven't turned the heat on in the house.
I try to hold out as long as possible, piling layers and thermals on the kids.
Why?
It's just a personal thing.
I feel like I use so much energy in the warm months running the ac (24/7), that I am trying to balance out. Let some frigid family use our kilowatts for a while.
This weekend...soccer tournament.
Pics. and recaps to follow.

off to buy ear plugs
Apparently Nick's snoring has become a problem for Ben.
How do I know this?
I found my can of pepper spray by Ben's bedside yesterday morning.
Glad I intervened (I hid it) before Nick was gassed in his sleep.
That would not have helped with the brotherly bond very much.
